Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker was a German theoretical physicist and philosopher whose work spanned nuclear physics, theoretical astronomy, and ethical reflection. In physics he made fundamental contributions to the theory of stellar energy generation by fusion and to studies of the formation of the Solar System, results that influenced twentieth‑century astrophysics and theoretical cosmogony. During World War II he was part of the team led by Werner Heisenberg that investigated nuclear processes in Germany; the historical significance of his participation remains debated with respect to the intentions and limits of that program. After the war he became a public figure active in the German antinuclear movement, joining the Göttingen Eighteen who opposed atomic armament in 1957. Throughout his life he combined science and philosophy, publishing works on the worldview of physics, the unity of nature, and ethical and political questions related to scientific progress. He received international recognition and left a legacy both through his scientific output and his public engagement on issues of peace, scientific responsibility, and the history of science.
