Carl Lewis is a former American track-and-field athlete whose competitive career ran from 1979 to 1996, establishing him as one of the greatest sprinters and long jumpers in history. During that period he won ten Olympic medals — nine gold — and ten medals at World Championships, including eight world titles, distinguishing himself with consistent performances in the 100 m, 200 m, and long jump. His dominance included world records in the 100 m, the 4x100 m relay, and the 4x200 m relay, as well as an extraordinary run of 65 consecutive long jump victories over a decade. Lewis is among the few athletes to win the same individual Olympic event four times in a row, a feat that places him alongside figures such as Michael Phelps and Ben Ainslie. He was inducted into the Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2012 in recognition of the lasting impact of his competitive career. He was also named Athlete of the Year by Track and Field News on three occasions and received international honors, including listings as Sportsman of the Century by committees and publications. Lewis’s career was also marked by controversies related to doping tests in the late 1980s; later reports and documents raised questions about how the U.S. sports authorities handled those matters at the time. After retiring, he remained active publicly, serving as an ambassador for international initiatives related to food and agriculture.
