Carl Orff was a German composer and music educator, regarded as one of the central figures of twentieth‑century music. He became internationally famous for Carmina Burana (1937), a staged cantata that heads a vocal trilogy (Trionfi) and established his reputation for evoking a medieval imagination combined with a striking rhythmic and percussive language. Many of his later works retain this archaic tone and an orchestration centered on percussion. His most enduring contribution, however, lies in pedagogy: from the 1920s Orff, in collaboration with Gunild Keetman, developed the Schulwerk — a music‑teaching method aimed at children and laypeople, based on singing, movement, and simple instruments. The approach became an international reference for enabling accessible, integrative musical practice. Orff’s career included work at an opera house and intensive educational activity in Munich, where he founded a school and worked until the end of his life. Aspects of his public conduct during the Nazi period and later claims regarding participation in the resistance are the subject of historiographical debate; accounts on this topic therefore require caution. His legacy remains present both in the concert repertoire, with works such as Catulli Carmina and De temporum fine comoedia, and in music education, where the Orff method continues to influence schools and pedagogical programs.
