Carlo Orazio Leopardi was an Italian nobleman best known for his family and documentary connection to his brother, the poet Giacomo Leopardi. A member of the small Recanati aristocracy, he studied modern languages and held local offices of responsibility — including Gonfaloniere and Anziano — and was appointed Director of the Post Office in Ancona through his father’s intervention. His married life was marked by personal choices that clashed with family norms: he first married for love to Paolina Mazzagalli, a decision that cost him the majorate, and later, widowed, married Teresa Teja. He maintained an active correspondence with the literary figures of his time, especially Prospero Viani, to whom he supplied letters and testimony essential for reconstructing his brother Giacomo’s youth. Carlo’s public reputation was ambivalent: he took part in the political and civic life of his region but faced accusations of miserliness and usury that affected his image. After his death in 1878, disputes over his burial and public reactions to his funeral revealed the contentious atmosphere surrounding his local memory.
