Carmen Mondragón, artistically known as Nahui Olin, was a painter, poet, and a central figure in the Mexican avant‑gardes of the 1920s and 1930s. The daughter of General Manuel Mondragón, she received a privileged education in Europe and kept contact with international artists in Paris; upon returning to Mexico she joined Mexico City’s cultural scene and associated with figures such as José Vasconcelos and Xavier Villaurrutia.
She was notable both for her output—poems, paintings with naïf influences, and musical compositions—and for serving as a muse to photographers and muralists, among them Tina Modotti, Edward Weston, and Diego Rivera. Her self‑portraits and portraits by others emphasize striking green eyes and a public image that challenged conventions about the body and sexuality.
Her passionate relationship with the painter Dr. Atl led her to adopt the name Nahui Olin, a symbol of Aztec renewal. Although she withdrew from public life beginning in the 1940s, her work and persona were reassessed posthumously, receiving exhibitions and inspiring contemporary literature, establishing her as a provocative and influential presence in Mexican artistic modernity.
