Caroline Cossey, known professionally as Tula, is a British model, actress, activist and author whose career increased visibility for trans people in the late 20th century. She rose to prominence as a glamour model, posing for publications such as Vogue Australia and Harper’s Bazaar, appearing as a Page Three Girl and, in 1991, becoming the first trans woman to appear in Playboy in a feature that acknowledged her identity. Her public life was marked by episodes of exposure and struggles for legal recognition. After appearing as an extra in the 1981 film For Your Eyes Only, tabloids revealed her transition, an episode that led her to write two autobiographies in which she recounts her personal experience and the challenges she faced. At the same time, she pursued legal battles over the right to marry and civil recognition, taking cases to European bodies in search of rights. On a personal and social level, Cossey became an influential figure in discussions about gender identity, trans rights and media representation. Her path—from the entertainment industry to legal and advocacy arenas—helped broaden public debate about access to recognition, dignity and equality.
