Cathy Freeman is a retired Australian sprinter best known for her achievements in the 400 metres. She emerged on the international scene in the 1990s, setting national records and collecting podium finishes at major events: silver at the 1996 Olympic Games (48.63 s), world champion in 1997 and winner at the 1999 World Championships, as well as double gold in the 200 m and 400 m at the 1994 Commonwealth Games. In 1990, at age 16, she became the first Indigenous Australian woman to win gold at a Commonwealth Games.
Her career included comebacks from injuries, culminating in 2000 when she won Olympic gold in the 400 m in Sydney and took on a symbolic role by lighting the Olympic flame. Off the track, Freeman founded a philanthropic organisation focused on communities and education in 2007, later renamed. Of Kuku‑Yalanji and Birri‑Gubba descent, she also has Chinese and Syrian ancestry.
Freeman’s impact extends beyond results: she became a national icon and a touchstone for Indigenous athletes, pairing elite performance with public visibility and community initiatives after her retirement in 2003.
