Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga is a Sri Lankan politician who served as the country’s president from 1994 to 2005, becoming the first woman to hold the office and the longest-serving president in the nation’s contemporary history. The daughter of two former prime ministers, she emerged from a prominent political family and took leadership of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), modernizing it and steering it toward market-oriented policies combined with social protection, summarized by the slogan “capitalism with a human face.” In government, she sought to restore democratic normality after a period of political violence, pursued peace negotiations with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and, after talks collapsed, led military operations during an intense phase of the armed conflict. Her administration also advanced proposals for constitutional reform to decentralize power, although these were not implemented. Kumaratunga’s tenure is noted for achievements in political stabilization and economic reforms, but also for criticisms regarding the expanded use of presidential powers and allegations of corruption in parts of the government. Her legacy combines economic opening and attempts at pacification with controversies over governance during a turbulent decade for Sri Lanka.
