Charles George Gordon was a British military officer and administrator whose career was noted for overseas campaigns and a tragic end that made him a public figure in the 19th century. He served in the Crimean War and built his reputation in China, commanding the so-called “Ever Victorious Army,” which played a decisive role in defeating the Taiping Rebellion and earned him recognition from both the Chinese court and the British government. He later entered the service of the Khedive of Egypt and, as governor-general of the Sudan, engaged in operations against local uprisings and in efforts to suppress the slave trade. After a period of exhaustion, he resigned and returned to Europe in 1880. In 1884 he returned to Khartoum to oversee the evacuation of loyalists, but he kept forces in the city and resisted the siege led by the Mahdi, Muhammad Ahmad. The prolonged defense provoked intense public emotion in Britain; help arrived only after the fall of Khartoum, by which time Gordon had already been killed. His career — marked by military actions in diverse theaters, colonial administration and an end that caused wide public repercussions — established him as a controversial figure and a prominent imperial personality of the 19th century.
