Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord was one of the most influential French diplomats and politicians of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born to an aristocratic family, he began a clerical career before becoming involved in revolutionary politics; he took part in the reform of the Church in France, later broke with the clergy, was excommunicated, and was elected administrator of the Paris department. His political survival skills allowed him to serve repeatedly as Minister of Foreign Affairs under a succession of regimes — the Revolution, the Consulate and the Napoleonic Empire, and again during the Bourbon Restoration. He played a central role at the Congress of Vienna (1814–1815), where he represented France and negotiated the reordering of Europe after the Napoleonic wars. Although accused of opportunism and immorality, Talleyrand was decisive in forging alliances and mediating between great powers, helping to reintegrate France into the European system. Late in life he took an active part in the rise of Louis-Philippe and served as ambassador in London, leaving a complex legacy: a diplomat whose skill ensured French influence at critical moments.
