Charlotte Corday, born Marie-Anne Charlotte Corday d’Armont, became a decisive and controversial figure of the French Revolution when she assassinated Jean‑Paul Marat in 1793. From the Normandy aristocracy and educated at a religious school, Corday adopted a political stance shaped by conservative ideas and by fear of the revolutionary radicalization sweeping France. Convinced that Marat, a journalist and popular tribune known for inciting persecutions and executions, was responsible for the escalation of violence against the Girondins and the condemnation of innocents, she planned the act alone. She went to Paris with the deliberate purpose of ending his influence; on 13 July 1793 she stabbed Marat while he was bathing, causing immediate shock. Arrested at the scene, she faced a swift trial and remained composed, admitting the crime and justifying it as a sacrifice for peace and the salvation of many. Executed a few days later, her act provoked intense debate: for some it was an act of political heroism; for others, an assassination that worsened revolutionary repression. The episode cemented both Marat’s mythical image and Corday’s role as a symbol of the Revolution’s internal tensions, leaving a complex legacy concerning political violence, legitimate opposition and individual sacrifice.
