Christiaan Eijkman was a Dutch physician and professor whose work on the etiology of beriberi paved the way for the discovery of antineuritic vitamins, particularly thiamine (vitamin B1). While directing a laboratory in the Dutch East Indies, he observed that birds developed neurological symptoms when fed polished rice and improved when given brown rice, concluding that the disease resulted from the absence of an essential dietary component. That hypothesis, later supported by epidemiological and chemical studies, was decisive for the nutritional understanding of beriberi.
His academic career encompassed research on human physiology in tropical regions, hygiene, and bacteriology. He showed, for example, that many assumptions about Europeans’ acclimatization to the tropics lacked a factual basis and developed microbiological tests applicable to water quality control. He published papers and textbooks and served as a professor of hygiene and forensic medicine in Utrecht.
For his central role in clarifying the link between diet and beriberi, Eijkman received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1929, shared with Frederick Hopkins. His legacy lies in helping establish nutrition as a scientific field and in the lasting influence on public health policies in endemic areas.
