Christian, Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, was a noble of the House of Hohenzollern who ruled the small Franconian principality formed from Brandenburg-Kulmbach, which from 1604 became centered on Bayreuth. As heir under the partition established by the House Treaty of Gera, he assumed Kulmbach when the senior line of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach-Kulmbach became extinct in 1603, while his brother Joachim Ernst received Ansbach. As a regional leader, Christian took on military and political roles: he was elected colonel of the Franconian Circle in 1606, was among the founders of the Protestant Union, and forged ties with Sweden during the Thirty Years’ War. His position withstood Emperor Ferdinand II’s attempts to remove him from power in 1635, preserving the autonomy of his small state within the troubled imperial context. He married Princess Maria of Prussia in 1604 and had several children, among whom Magdalena Sibylla—who married the Elector of Saxony—and Erdmann August, the hereditary prince, are notable. Christian’s legacy lies in the territorial and dynastic consolidation of Brandenburg-Bayreuth during a period of profound religious and political upheaval in central Europe.
