Christine Marie of France was a French princess and regent of Savoy from 1637 to 1663. A daughter of Henry IV and Marie de' Medici, she carried significant dynastic influence: sister of Louis XIII and sister‑in‑law to the kings of Spain and England, placing her at the center of seventeenth‑century European political networks.
Married to Victor Amadeus I, Duke of Savoy, she introduced French court fashions and customs to Turin, promoted renovations at palaces such as the Madama and the Valentino, and sought to raise the duchy’s prestige, envisioning Savoy as resembling a small France. She kept up an intense correspondence with her sister Henrietta Maria and served as a confidante during the English Civil War.
As regent, she faced a serious dynastic crisis: the Piedmontese Civil War, in which the “madamisti” and “principisti” parties fought for control after the heir’s death. Thanks to French support, Christine prevailed, securing her son’s succession and preserving the duchy’s relative autonomy. Her legacy lies in consolidating ducal authority and the cultural francization of the Savoyard court.
