Chryste Dionne Gaines is a former American sprinter known for her achievements in individual sprints and relay events. A 100 m specialist, she rose to international prominence in 1995 by winning gold at the Pan American Games in Mar del Plata and by running on the U.S. quartet that won the 4x100 m at the World Championships in Gothenburg. At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Gaines was a member of the gold-medal 4x100 m relay team alongside Gail Devers, Inger Miller and Gwen Torrence, becoming an Olympic champion. In 1997 she repeated success at the world championships by contributing to another 4x100 m gold in Athens. She returned to the Olympic podium in Sydney 2000, earning a bronze medal as part of the U.S. 4x100 m team. Later involved in proceedings related to the disqualification of a teammate for doping, Gaines and the other athletes retained their medals after appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Her legacy is tied to consistent performances in elite relays during the 1990s, a decade in which she was part of winning teams at major international competitions.
