Clifford Ambrose Truesdell III was an American mathematician, natural philosopher, and historian of science, known for his work in rational mechanics and the foundations of thermodynamics. A professor at Johns Hopkins University from 1961, he supervised influential researchers and helped establish the axiomatic approach to continuum mechanics by combining mathematical rigor with historical and philosophical reflection. Truesdell founded and edited leading journals in the field, including Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis and Archive for the History of Exact Sciences, contributing to the institutionalization of these disciplines. His writings include standard works—among them texts on continuum mechanics, rational thermodynamics, and critical histories of science—that influenced generations of mathematicians, physicists, and engineers. Recognized internationally, he received honors such as the Euler Medal of the Soviet Academy of Sciences (1958 and 1983), the Bingham Medal, and the George David Birkhoff Prize of the American Mathematical Society. His legacy combines technical contribution, editorial leadership, and a critical approach to the history of science.
