Clint Hartung was an American baseball player who pitched right-handed and later played right field for the New York Giants from 1947 to 1952. Tall and powerful, he attracted attention in the minor leagues and on military teams during World War II, where he put up impressive numbers that raised expectations and prompted hyperbolic comparisons with the game’s great figures. Contrary to public expectation, his performance in MLB regular-season play fell short of projections: he had stretches of solid hitting and only modest results as a pitcher, struggled defensively, and had difficulty handling breaking pitches. In 1950 he stopped pitching and played exclusively as an outfielder, a rare change in the league. After leaving the Giants he moved between the minor leagues and semiprofessional teams, including stints at the AAA level and with the well-known semipro club in Sinton, Texas. His career is remembered both for its early promise and for a sense of overestimation; that duality led to the creation, in baseball statistical literature, of the “Clint Hartung Award,” given to the most overrated rookie of each decade.
