Infante Dom Manuel of Braganza was a Portuguese prince and an adventurous figure of the House of Braganza, known for his wandering life at European courts and for military exploits in the service of the Austrian Empire. The seventh son of Peter II, he made his mark in youth by leaving Portugal without permission to seek a military career and fame abroad, serving under Prince Eugene of Savoy in campaigns against the Ottoman Empire, where he was wounded at Petrovaradin and took part in the siege of Temesvár. Appointed field marshal and commander of a cuirassier regiment, he earned a reputation as a warrior and moved in high European society for about two decades. His standing at court and attempts at political advantage included connections to claims on the Polish throne and approaches to various royal houses, though without success. Life in foreign salons went hand in hand with excessive spending; heavy debts forced his return to Portugal in 1734, with some accounts settled by an advance on his inheritance. Settled in Belas, he spent his last years maintaining a provincial household and left an ambiguous legacy: remembered both for his military feats and cosmopolitan life and for a dissipated lifestyle that exhausted royal resources and provoked curiosity and chronicles in European and Portuguese letters.
