Francesco di Paola Luigi Emanuele, known as the Count of Trapani, was a prince of the Two Sicilies and a member of the extensive Bourbon-Two Sicilies family. The youngest son of Francis I and Infanta Maria Isabel of Spain, his descent linked him to the Spanish and Austrian royal houses—he was a great-grandson of Charles III on both sides. This dynastic position placed him at the center of European marital alliances in the nineteenth century. At one point considered a possible husband for Queen Isabella II of Spain, Francesco ultimately married in 1850 his niece Maria Isabel of Austria-Tuscany; the marriage produced six children, not all of whom survived childhood. Among his descendants was Maria Antonietta, who married Prince Alfonso, Count of Caserta. Francesco’s life and career were shaped by the decline of the monarchy in the Two Sicilies: in 1861, after Garibaldi’s invasion, the royal family took refuge under the protection of Pope Pius IX in Rome; in 1870 they fled to France in the face of Italian unification. The prince spent his final years in exile and died in Paris in 1892, and was buried in Père-Lachaise Cemetery.
