Connie Chung is an American journalist of Chinese descent, known for a long career as an anchor and reporter at several U.S. television networks, including ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and MSNBC. A journalism graduate of the University of Maryland, she rose to prominence in the 1970s as a Washington correspondent and later as a news anchor and host of newsmagazines at local and national stations. Throughout her career she conducted high-profile interviews — among her subjects were Claus von Bülow, Congressman Gary Condit in the Chandra Levy case, and basketball star Magic Johnson when he publicly announced he was HIV-positive. In 1993 she became the second woman to co-anchor the main evening newscast of a major U.S. network when she joined the CBS Evening News, a role that increased her national visibility. Her work also includes talk shows and late-night news programs, as well as controversial episodes that drew public criticism and media attention. Later, Chung spoke publicly about sexual harassment she experienced during her career, contributing to public debate on the subject. Recognized for her versatility between live journalism and in-depth reporting, she is remembered as one of the few Asian American journalists to achieve prominence on the largest U.S. television networks.
