Conrad Veidt was a German–British actor whose career was prominent in silent and sound cinema from the 1910s through the 1940s. He became known for expressive roles in avant-garde and horror films, notably as Cesare in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) and the protagonist of The Man Who Laughs (1928), whose image influenced the iconography of later villains. While one of UFA’s major stars, Veidt appeared in landmark works of German Expressionism and in pioneering films such as Different from the Others (1919), which addressed homosexuality with rare sensitivity for its time. He also acted in early German sound pictures and held roles in films like The Hands of Orlac and Waxworks. With the rise of Nazism, Veidt — married to a Jewish woman — left Germany in 1933, settled in Britain and became a British citizen in 1939, continuing his film career there (including The Thief of Bagdad, 1940). He later emigrated to the United States, where he played Major Strasser in Casablanca (1942), the last film released in his lifetime. Veidt left a legacy tied to the power of physical performance on screen, his participation in key Expressionist films, and the experience of an exiled artist who worked across European and Hollywood film industries.
