Cosimo III de’ Medici was the penultimate Grand Duke of Tuscany, ruling from 1670 to 1723. Born into the Medici family, he succeeded his father Ferdinand II and presided over the longest reign in Tuscan history, characterized by a conservative, religious orientation that produced strict moral legislation, notably targeting prostitution and popular festivities.
His marriage to Marguerite Louise d’Orléans, a granddaughter of Henry IV of France, was both contentious and politically significant: the alliance strengthened dynastic ties with France but led to domestic tensions and the eventual retreat of his wife to a convent in Paris. The marriage produced three children, including Anna Maria Luisa, whose father’s attempt to make her the universal heir of Tuscany met opposition from the Holy Roman Empire.
Cosimo III’s reign coincided with Tuscany’s economic decline, marked by worsening public finances and social setbacks that eroded the dynasty’s regional influence. After his death, succession disputes and the absence of an heir acceptable to the emperor soon resulted in the duchy’s transfer to the House of Lorraine.
