David W. Griffith was an American filmmaker regarded by many critics and historians as a central figure in shaping cinematic language. A pioneer in the use of the close-up, parallel editing, suspense built through alternating scenes, and camera movement, he directed hundreds of short films between 1908 and 1913 and then began making feature films that helped define the codes of classical narrative cinema. His name became linked to monumental works of silent cinema such as The Birth of a Nation and Intolerance; the former brought broad technical and industrial impact to American cinema but also sparked intense controversy for its racist depiction and for glorifying the Ku Klux Klan. Intolerance revealed his formal ambition by interweaving parallel narratives to express broad themes. Griffith worked closely with collaborators such as cinematographer Billy Bitzer and actresses like Lillian Gish, and he influenced generations of filmmakers worldwide. Although he lost commercial prestige in the later stages of his career, he remains recognized for his decisive role in consolidating narrative and aesthetic techniques that shaped modern cinema.
