Dash Crofts, born Darrell George Crofts, was an American musician and songwriter best known as one half of the soft-rock duo Seals & Crofts with Jim Seals. Initially a drummer, he went on to share lead vocals and play guitar and mandolin in the duo, helping create the melodic, acoustic sound that defined part of the 1970s pop-rock scene. Throughout the 1970s Seals & Crofts scored original hits such as “Summer Breeze” and “Diamond Girl,” earning multiple gold and platinum certifications and becoming a touchstone of soft rock with polished arrangements and reflective lyrics. His career included periods with the band The Champs before forming the duo, collaborations and solo work, including the album Today. Crofts’s musical identity was linked to his personal and spiritual interests, with the Baháʼí Faith influencing some of his songwriting. Offstage he lived in various countries, bred horses, and combined artistic activity with a rural life. His legacy remains tied to the songs and sound that defined a generation of American soft rock.
