David Jeffrey LaPoint is a former American professional baseball pitcher, known for his Major League career during the 1980s and early 1990s. After being drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1977, he made his MLB debut in 1980 and was soon included in the trade package that sent him to the St. Louis Cardinals, where he spent much of his early years as a reliever and later as a starter. He was a member of the Cardinals’ 1982 World Series championship team and received votes for the National League Rookie of the Year that same season. Over the course of his career, LaPoint wore the uniforms of several franchises — including the Giants, Tigers, Padres, White Sox, Pirates and Yankees — alternating between starting roles and long-relief duties. His best stretches came in specific periods, notably solid performances with the White Sox and Pirates in 1987–1988. Near the end of his playing days he spent time in the minor leagues and independent circuits before retiring as a player. After retiring, LaPoint moved into managerial roles in independent clubs. He served as coach and manager for teams such as the Adirondack Lumberjacks, the Bridgeport Bluefish (where he won the Atlantic League Manager of the Year award) and the Rockland Boulders, building a career that transitioned him from player to coach within American professional baseball.
