Dave McCoy was an American skiing pioneer and entrepreneur, best known for founding and developing the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. While working as a hydrologist for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, McCoy spent whole seasons measuring the snowpack in the Eastern Sierra; that hands-on experience led him to identify Mammoth as an ideal skiing site and to install the first rudimentary lift systems as early as the 1940s. His career combined competition and teaching: he won state slalom titles and worked as a coach, training and mentoring athletes who reached Olympic and national levels of competition, including some of his own children. He faced major obstacles in turning Mammoth into a commercial ski resort—ranging from bank refusals and precarious facilities to droughts and economic crises—but he persevered, installing the first chairlift in 1955 and gradually expanding the infrastructure. McCoy’s legacy is tied to establishing Mammoth as a significant mountain destination in the United States and to his lasting influence on American ski culture, acknowledged by his induction into the Ski Hall of Fame and by a career that spanned decades.
