Dave Van Ronk was an American singer and instrumentalist central to the Greenwich Village folk scene in the 1950s–70s, known as the “Mayor of MacDougal Street.” His repertoire ranged across blues, English ballads, gospel, New Orleans jazz and ragtime, and his guitar technique—characterized by syncopation, precision and an almost pianistic approach—became a model for solo performers adapting ragtimes such as "Maple Leaf Rag" for acoustic guitar. Van Ronk was also a cultural organizer: he was a leading presence in the Village coffeehouse circuit, mentored and promoted young artists such as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Phil Ochs, and left behind arrangements that influenced later recordings, including a version of "House of the Rising Sun" that Dylan recorded before it became a hit for another band. His personal presence—expansive charisma and imposing stature—reinforced his public image as a mentor and father figure of the folk movement. Politically engaged at times in his life, he took part in left-wing causes and was a member of labor organizations; he was present at historical episodes such as the Stonewall riots in 1969. Among other honors, he received ASCAP’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. His musical legacy combines preservation and reinvention: Van Ronk helped transmit rural forms of the blues and folk into the urban sphere, influencing later generations through his arrangements, performances and role as a bridge between musical traditions.
