David O’Neil Thompson is a former American basketball player known for his athletic explosiveness and leaping ability, which earned him the nickname “Skywalker.” A standout at North Carolina State University, he led the team to the NCAA Tournament championship in 1974 and remains one of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s top figures; his No. 44 was retired by the university.

Professionally, he shone with the Denver Nuggets in the ABA and NBA, where he was named ABA Rookie of the Year (1976), was a four-time NBA All-Star and is one of six players in league history to score 70+ points in a game (73 points in 1978). He also played for the Seattle SuperSonics, experiencing moments of resurgence before injuries and personal problems affected his career.

Thompson was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996, recognition of his technical and cultural impact on the game—particularly for popularizing the alley-oop and setting a standard for vertical explosiveness in basketball. After struggles with substance abuse, he rebuilt his life, completed a degree in sociology and works as a motivational speaker, maintaining ties with franchises such as the Charlotte Hornets and Denver Nuggets.
