David Arellano was a Chilean footballer and a pivotal figure in the country’s football history. A forward and captain, he came to notice early at Club Deportivo Magallanes, where he was top scorer and a regular starter as a young player before joining the Chile national team in the 1920s. His international appearances included South American championships, in which he distinguished himself as a goalscorer. Frustrated with the amateur, rigid practices of Chilean clubs, Arellano led a group of dissenting players to found Colo-Colo on 19 April 1925. As the club’s first captain and informal coach, he introduced innovations: regular training sessions, internal discipline, tactical analysis and even equipment improvements, helping to professionalize the local game. Under his direction Colo-Colo enjoyed a triumphant debut, winning the metropolitan league undefeated and rapidly winning popular support. Arellano was also a leading scorer at the 1926 Copa América. He died in 1927 after an injury sustained during a European tour; his legacy endures in the club’s mourning emblem and in the name of the Monumental David Arellano stadium.
