David Koresh, born Vernon Wayne Howell, was the charismatic leader and founder of a Davidian offshoot that gained notoriety in the 1980s and early 1990s. A self‑proclaimed prophet, Koresh developed his own theology—which he called “New Light”—that presented him as a messianic figure capable of interpreting apocalyptic biblical passages, especially concerning the Seven Seals of Revelation. His leadership drew followers through exclusivist doctrines, social control within the camp, and atypical family practices, including his claim to multiple wives. During the 1980s, internal conflicts and power struggles marked his rise, culminating in the establishment of the Mount Carmel compound near Waco, Texas, as the group’s center. In 1993, an ATF operation and the subsequent FBI siege ended tragically when a fire at the Mount Carmel complex killed Koresh and dozens of followers, including children. The Waco episode became a public reference point for millenarian sects, charismatic leadership, and state intervention in religious groups, prompting debates about religious freedom, public safety, and conflict‑resolution tactics. Koresh’s legacy remains primarily as a case study of religious radicalization and its social and political consequences.
