David Selby is an American actor whose career is known for iconic television characters and work in film and theater. He became nationally known as Quentin Collins on the gothic series Dark Shadows, a role he also revisited in audio projects, and further increased his profile by playing Richard Channing on Falcon Crest, a character who evolved from antagonist to audience favorite over eight seasons. A graduate of West Virginia University who earned a doctorate from Southern Illinois University, Selby combines acting with writing: he has authored plays, poetry collections and novels, including Lincoln's Better Angel and My Shadowed Past, the latter about his experience on Dark Shadows. In film he has appeared in titles such as Up the Sandbox, Raise the Titanic and The Social Network, and he lent his voice to animated adaptations, portraying James Gordon in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. Also recognized for his stage work, Selby has portrayed Abraham Lincoln on notable occasions, including an event at the reopening of Ford's Theatre. His career has received academic honors, including the Life Achievement Award from the College of Creative Arts at West Virginia University and an honorary doctorate.
