Derek Jarman was a multifaceted British filmmaker whose work spanned film, visual arts, set design, and gardening. He became a central figure in experimental and queer cinema, known for features such as Sebastiane, Caravaggio, Edward II, The Last of England, and The Tempest, as well as for audiovisual collaborations with bands including the Sex Pistols, The Smiths, and Pet Shop Boys. His radical, poetic aesthetic broke narrative conventions and helped establish the film-essay as a recognized form. Open about his homosexuality, Jarman was also an activist for LGBT rights and lived publicly with AIDS after his 1986 diagnosis. That personal and collective struggle runs through his work: the film Blue (1993), dominated by a single blue field and a dense soundtrack, is often cited as his artistic testimony on the disease and impending blindness. Beyond cinema, Jarman left a legacy in gardening with the gravel garden at Prospect Cottage in Dungeness, a postmodern project that incorporated marine debris and coastal plant species as an aesthetic act and form of resistance. His hybrid, iconoclastic output influenced generations of independent filmmakers and helped broaden the boundaries of queer and experimental cinema.
