Dick Gephardt is an American politician and attorney whose congressional career spanned nearly three decades representing the state of Missouri in the House of Representatives (1977–2005). A prominent figure in the Democratic Party, he held leadership positions—House Majority Leader from 1989 to 1995 and House Minority Leader from 1995 to 2003—and was frequently involved in the major legislative and strategic disputes of that era.
A candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988 and 2004, his 1988 campaign gained attention by winning the Iowa caucuses but was ultimately undermined by limited resources and negative attacks that constrained his national competitiveness. In the ensuing decades, Gephardt retained significant influence in Congress, playing a central role in party negotiations and in shaping labor and economic policy.
After leaving elective office, he worked as a lobbyist and consultant, founding political consulting and public relations firms, in addition to advising major companies and taking part in initiatives on governance and responsible media. His public legacy is defined by his party leadership, engagement on labor issues, and his shift into private-sector consulting.
