Didier Lockwood was a French violinist and composer whose career spanned jazz, jazz-rock and film music. Born into a family of musicians, he excelled early at the conservatory and chose experimental paths, adopting the electric violin and joining the group Magma in the late 1970s. His practice combined classical training and modern improvisation, producing projects such as the Didier Lockwood Group and collaborations with internationally known jazz figures. Known for technically virtuosic solos and innovative electronic effects, Lockwood worked with artists including Stéphane Grappelli, Dave Brubeck, Michel Petrucciani, Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis, and appeared at festivals and seasons in the United States. He composed film scores and wrote notable soundtracks, including for the animated film Les Enfants de la pluie. In addition to his work as a performer, he played a significant pedagogical role: he published an award-winning method of improvisation and founded the Centre des musiques Didier Lockwood, dedicated to teaching improvisation. He received awards and honors, served as vice president of an arts education council, and left an institutional legacy through festivals, including one renamed in his memory.
