Dinah Washington, born Ruth Lee Jones, was an American singer and pianist who became one of the most popular Black artists of the 1950s. Primarily a jazz vocalist, she moved easily through blues, R&B and traditional pop, adopting nicknames such as “Queen of the Blues” and “Queen of the Jukeboxes.” Her professional career began in Chicago clubs and gained traction when she worked with Lionel Hampton’s band; her recording debut with “Evil Gal Blues” brought immediate success. Between 1948 and 1955 she amassed dozens of R&B hits, including number ones such as “Am I Asking Too Much” and “Baby Get Lost,” and crossed over to the pop market with versions like “I Wanna Be Loved.” In the late 1950s she reached her commercial peak with “What a Diff’rence a Day Makes” and successful duets with Brook Benton. She recorded with major jazz figures such as Clifford Brown, Cannonball Adderley and Ben Webster, and worked with prominent arrangers and musicians. Her legacy includes a broad influence bridging jazz, blues and popular music, posthumous recognition by music institutions and a discography that demonstrates stylistic versatility and popular reach.
