Donald Crisp was an English actor whose career spanned from the silent era into the 1950s and 1960s; he was also prominent as a producer, director, and screenwriter in the early decades of the 20th century. He worked with pioneers such as D.W. Griffith, appearing in milestones of silent cinema—for example, as General Ulysses S. Grant in The Birth of a Nation (1915)—and directed around 70 films, including collaborations with figures like Buster Keaton and Douglas Fairbanks. With the arrival of sound, Crisp gave up directing and became one of Hollywood’s most in-demand character actors, playing both kindly father figures and darker roles. He performed alongside major stars of the classical era—Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Laurence Olivier, Errol Flynn, and Gregory Peck—and built an extensive filmography, estimated at several hundred credits. His portrayal of the father in How Green Was My Valley (1941), directed by John Ford, earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1942, the high point of his critical recognition. Beyond acting, Crisp played a notable behind-the-scenes role in the industry: he advised financial institutions such as the Bank of America on film financing and established himself as a real estate investor.
