Donato Bilancia was an Italian serial killer whose wave of violence struck the Italian Riviera between October 1997 and May 1998. Over seven months he killed 17 people — nine women and eight men — combining thefts, personal revenge and attacks on passersby and night workers. His crimes included murders in transit, robberies of establishments and the killings of prostitutes and security guards, often committed with a .38 revolver.
Before the homicide spree Bilancia had a history of petty crime, psychiatric hospitalization and work in various jobs such as mechanic and shop clerk. He was also a compulsive gambler and lived alone; accounts indicate that episodes of humiliation in childhood and psychological problems were part of his biography, but there is no consensus on clear motives for the homicidal escalation.
The investigation arrested Bilancia in May 1998 after witness calls and DNA confirmation. In 2000 he was sentenced to 13 life terms plus 20 years for attempted homicide, with a court order that he never be released. He died of COVID-19 in December 2020 while serving his sentence at the Due Palazzi prison in Padua.
