Dorothy Comingore, born Margaret Louise Comingore, was an American stage, radio, and film actress whose career is best known for her role as Susan Alexander Kane in Citizen Kane (1941), the film debut of Orson Welles. Her performance drew praise at the time and briefly marked her as a promising talent in Hollywood after earlier small roles and a studio contract. Throughout her career, Comingore was also active in social and labor causes: she supported union relief efforts, took part in desegregation campaigns at military clubs, and backed defense committees in political cases—engagements that attracted attention and suspicion during the anti‑communist climate of the 1940s and 1950s. From the late 1940s her reputation came under attack in newspaper columns aligned with powerful interests, and with the rise of the House Un-American Activities Committee her career was affected by the blacklist. In 1952 she refused to testify by naming colleagues and subsequently faced personal and professional repercussions that curtailed her film work. Her legacy remains linked both to a central performance in a film now regarded as a milestone of cinema and to the personal and professional consequences endured by artists during the McCarthy era.
