Dorothy Stuart Hamill is a former American figure skater best known for winning the Olympic gold medal in 1976 and the World title that same year. As an amateur she was notable for combining athletic technique with grace, and she was the last Olympic ladies’ singles champion to win without a triple jump. Her repertoire included creating the “Hamill camel,” a transition from a camel spin to a sit spin that entered the sport’s vocabulary. Trained intensively at rinks in New York and Lake Placid, Hamill was U.S. champion from 1974 to 1976 and competed under the media nickname “America’s sweetheart.” Her public image extended beyond the ice: her short haircut popularized the “short and sassy” look, and she served as a spokeswoman for hair products, establishing cultural influence in the 1970s. After turning professional, she starred in the Ice Capades from 1977 to 1984 and maintained a presence in skating shows and productions for decades. She later faced osteoarthritis, which was successfully treated and allowed her to return to the ice in productions such as Broadway on Ice. Her legacy combines technical contributions to the sport with a strong cultural impact outside competition.
