Dorothy Miriam Ziegler was an American musician and conductor, best known for her work as a trombonist and for her contributions to music education. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music with a master’s degree in piano from the University of Southern California, she continued her studies in France and with teachers such as Nadia Boulanger. She performed with major orchestras and at prominent festivals, including the Hollywood Bowl, the National Symphony, and the Tanglewood Music Center. From 1944 to 1958 she was principal trombone of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, a notable appointment that placed her among the few women holding prominent positions in major American orchestras at the time. At the same time she pursued pedagogical work as a piano teacher at the St. Louis Institute of Music and took part in music therapy programs. As a conductor and administrator, she led the Kirkwood Symphony, served as director of the St. Louis Grand Opera Guild (1955–1964), and conducted opera productions aimed at school and university audiences. She also headed the Indiana University Opera Theater (1964–1966) and the University of Miami Opera Theater (1966–1971). Her legacy includes recordings, appearances as an accompanist at international competitions, and posthumous recognition: in 2012 she was honored as a Brasswoman Pioneer. Donald H. White’s Tetra Ergon contains a movement dedicated “In Memory of Dottie.”
