Duncan James Corrour Grant was a British painter who also worked as a textile, ceramic and set designer, and was a central figure in the Bloomsbury Group. He trained at schools such as Westminster and the Slade, and his aesthetic was influenced by French Post-Impressionism and by the critic-artist Roger Fry. His work combined portrait and landscape painting with decorative and applied arts projects; he was actively involved in the Omega Workshops as co-director alongside Vanessa Bell. Throughout his life he remained deeply engaged in England’s artistic and intellectual circles, collaborating on theatrical sets and costumes and undertaking notable public commissions, including designs for the liner RMS Queen Mary that were later rejected by the company’s management. His work and practice reflected the intersection of visual art and decorative design in the early twentieth century. Grant’s personal life was intertwined with his work: relationships and domestic arrangements within the Bloomsbury circle—most notably with Vanessa Bell and David Garnett—shaped his career and legacy. When he died in 1978, he left a body of work and a lasting influence on modern British art, preserved in collections and critical studies.
