Luigi Amedeo, Duke of the Abruzzi, was a prince of the House of Savoy and a central figure in geographical and high‑mountain exploration at the turn of the 20th century. An officer of the Italian navy, he distinguished himself as a mountaineer by leading the first ascent of Mount St. Elias (1897) and by commanding polar expeditions aboard the ship Stella Polare; that campaign produced important cartographic work and achieved a record advance in latitude during an attempt on the North Pole.
As an African explorer, he led the 1906 expedition to the Rwenzori Mountains, climbed the main peaks and lent his name to one of the summits. In 1909 he led the famed attempt on K2; the mountain’s eastern route became known as the Abruzzi Spur, a technical legacy that still guides climbers.
A career military man, he served as an admiral in the Regia Marina, commanding forces in the Adriatic during World War I. In his later years he devoted himself to implementing agricultural and colonization projects in southern Somalia, where he founded experimental settlements. His public life combined scientific, military and colonial undertakings that shaped the geography and history of Italian exploration.
