Duke of Holstein-Gottorp Philipp was a Danish prince of the House of Holstein-Gottorp who ruled the duchy of Gottorp from 1587 to 1590. The son of Duke Adolf and Christine of Hesse, he succeeded to the title while still a minor after his brother’s death, with his mother serving as regent. Philipp’s short rule was marked by institutional conflicts with the local estates, which opposed the regency’s attempts to concentrate power without the customary election by the Landtag.
In 1588 the Landtag confirmed Philipp as duke on the condition that he respect regional privileges, although the chamber secured limits on the automatic recognition of ducal prerogatives. There were also disputes with the Danish government over territorial matters, such as the county of Svavsted, reflecting the precarious political position of the small principalities in the region at the end of the 16th century.
Philipp died in 1590 at the age of 20, with no known offspring, and was buried in the crypt of Schleswig Cathedral. His brother John Adolph succeeded him in the duchy. Philipp’s brief rule illustrates the dynastic dynamics and the tensions among regency, estates, and the crown in contemporary Germany and Denmark.
