Duque de Madrid Jaime

Jaime de Bourbon and Bourbon-Parma, known as the Duke of Madrid, was a central figure in the dynastic disputes of early 20th‑century Europe. The son of Carlos Maria de Bourbon and Margarida de Bourbon‑Parma, he became notable as the Carlist claimant to the Spanish throne (as Jaime III) and as the legitimist claimant to the French throne (as Jaime I), holding dynastic titles that reflected the long Bourbon tradition. A professionally trained soldier, he served in the Imperial Russian Army at age 26 and took part in campaigns such as the suppression of the Boxer Uprising and the Russo‑Japanese War, withdrawing from service after his father’s death in 1909. During World War I he lived in exile in Austria, a period in which he lost direct contact with the Carlists in Spain and faced internal tensions within the movement related to international alignments. After the war he sought negotiations with other dynastic branches; meetings with Alfonso XIII in 1931 indicated attempts at reconciliation between rival factions, but Jaime died before any formal agreement was concluded. He left no descendants and was succeeded as claimant by his uncle Alfonso Carlos, leaving a legacy defined by his symbolic role in Iberian and broader European monarchical controversies.
