Duke Paul Friedrich of Mecklenburg-Schwerin was a member of the House of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and a senior cavalry officer in Mecklenburg in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A son of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II, he belonged to the German aristocracy and played a notable role within the dynastic networks of his time, reflected in his marriage to his cousin Princess Maria of Windisch-Graetz, with whom he had five children. In 1884 he formally renounced his and his descendants’ rights of succession to the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, a decision that altered the principality’s line of succession and marked his withdrawal from dynastic claims. Three years later, in 1887, he converted from Lutheranism to Catholicism—a change followed by his family and influenced by relations cultivated in Venice. Living for extended periods in Venice, Paul Friedrich and his family maintained a close friendship with Cardinal Giuseppe Sarto, the future Pope Pius X, who provided them with spiritual counsel. His life combined military, dynastic, and religious elements, leaving a legacy characterized by a shift in confessional allegiance and a repositioning within the German dynasties.
