Philippe II, Duke of Orléans (1674–1723) was a prince of the high French nobility, Duke of Orléans and regent of the Kingdom of France from 1715 to 1723 during the minority of Louis XV. A grandson of Louis XIII and nephew of Louis XIV, he consolidated political and patrimonial standing by inheriting vast titles and domains of the Orléans branch, and he played notable military roles in the War of the Spanish Succession, notably taking part in the Battle of Turin (1706).
He assumed the Regency on the death of Louis XIV and confronted the royal will that sought to limit his powers, obtaining from the Parlement of Paris recognition of near-unlimited authority and the political exclusion of the Duke of Maine. His government, known as “the Regency,” ushered in a period of relaxed courtly strictness and challenges to absolutism, creating space for more liberal political and cultural practices.
A controversial figure because of his libertine circle and a private life marked by numerous mistresses and illegitimate children, Philippe II also left an institutional legacy by restoring certain parliamentary prerogatives and organizing royal administration at the start of Louis XV’s reign. His prestige and political actions affected the balance between the House of Bourbon and the kingdom’s intermediate powers.
