Ernst II, Duke of Saxe‑Altenburg, was the last reigning sovereign of that small German state and a representative figure of the transition from monarchy to republic after World War I. A career military officer, he served as a colonel and commanded a division, distinguishing himself at the Battle of Péronne; he declined promotions to posts on the kaiser’s general staff. Throughout his life he pursued practical scientific interests: passionate about telecommunications and aviation, he installed wireless equipment in his castle and later sponsored an observatory at Trockenborn‑Wolfersdorf, where he employed the astronomer Kurd Kisshauer. With a reduced fortune after his abdication in November 1918, he lived as a private citizen, moved to Berlin and experienced marital episodes that marked his biography — a 1898 marriage to Princess Adelaide of Schaumburg‑Lippe, with whom he had four children, and later a morganatic marriage to Maria Triebel. In 1937 he joined the Nazi Party. After World War II he remained on his property in the Soviet zone and accepted citizenship of the German Democratic Republic, remaining until his death as the last representative of a generation of German princes who had reigned before 1918.
