Johann Georg I, Duke of Saxe-Eisenach, was a German duke of the Saxe-Eisenach line during the second half of the 17th century. Born into the nobility, he became regent in 1668 after the death of his brother Adolf William, assuming guardianship of his infant nephew who died in 1671, when Johann Georg effectively inherited the duchy. His rule consolidated the newly created dynastic line of Saxe-Eisenach. During his reign he took part in the territorial partition negotiations of 1672 following the extinction of the Saxe-Altenburg line, confirming possession of Eisenach and receiving additional towns; this family reallocation helped shape the regional political map among the small Saxon principalities. He was sovereign during the period when Johann Sebastian Bach was born in the duchy, an episode that later underscored the region’s cultural significance. Married to Countess Johanna of Sayn-Wittgenstein, he had eight children, several of whom attained noble positions and dynastic alliances important to the German houses. Johann Georg died in 1686 in a hunting accident, leaving a dynastic legacy that became extinct in 1741.
