Bernhard I of Saxe-Meiningen was the first duke of Saxe-Meiningen and a central figure in the partitioning of the Ernestine family territories in the late 17th century. The sixth son of Duke Ernest I of Saxe-Gotha, he ruled jointly with his brothers after his father's death in 1675 until the 1680 partition agreement, which granted him towns including Meiningen, Wasungen and Salzungen.
Soon after receiving his lands, Bernhard commissioned the construction of a ducal residence at Meiningen — Elisabethenburg Palace, completed in 1692 and named for his second wife — establishing there the administrative and symbolic seat of the new duchy. His administration sought to stabilize finances through the sale of state assets and fiscal reforms, measures that secured the principality’s viability.
Married in his second marriage to Elisabeth Eleonore of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, he left descendants who continued the dynasty. In his will he ordered joint governance by his sons to avoid an immediate further division of the territory. Bernhard I’s legacy is the institutional foundation of Saxe-Meiningen and the consolidation of its capital as a regional political and cultural center.
