Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex (1773–1843), was a British prince, the sixth son of King George III and Queen Charlotte. Unlike most of his brothers, he did not pursue a military or naval career, instead devoting himself to civil and cultural roles. From 1830 to 1838 he served as president of the Royal Society, becoming notable as a patron of science and for his involvement with the intellectual institutions of his time.
As a member of the royal family, his private life provoked controversy: he married Lady Augusta Murray without royal consent in 1793, a union later annulled under the Royal Marriages Act of 1772; the relationship produced two children who were raised outside the dynastic succession. Parliament granted him a financial settlement, and he continued to associate with Lady Augusta until 1801.
Created Duke of Sussex in 1801, he also served as Grand Master of the Freemasons and has been linked to support for Masonic activities beyond England. He married again in 1831 to Lady Cecilia Letitia Buggin; she was never officially recognized as duchess, though she later received a title in her own right. With no recognized legitimate offspring, his dukedom became extinct at his death; he left a legacy in scientific institutions and in the public role of a prince devoted to culture.
